Expert guide
Choosing the right countertop for your kitchen
Countertops are the surface you touch every day for the next 20 years. Material, seam placement, and sink choice matter more than most homeowners realize.
Material comparison at a glance
Each material has a trade-off between look, maintenance, and cost. Here's the honest breakdown we give every Central Florida client.
- Quartz — engineered, non-porous, no sealing, consistent pattern
- Granite — natural, unique slabs, needs yearly sealing, very heat-tolerant
- Quartzite — natural stone, harder than granite, dramatic veining, premium price
- Marble — beautiful but etches from citrus and wine, best on baking islands
- Solid surface (Corian) — seamless, repairable, softer surface, mid-price
Seams, edges, and sink options
The details that separate a $5k install from a $15k install are usually invisible at first glance — but you'll feel them daily.
- Seams placed at sink corners or short runs, never across the main prep area
- Edge profiles: eased (modern), beveled, ogee (traditional), mitered waterfall
- Under-mount sinks — clean wipe-down, no rim to trap crumbs
- Workstation sinks with integrated cutting boards and drying racks
- Faucet hole layout planned around your soap dispenser and air switch
Maintenance for Florida kitchens
Humidity and hard water are real here. A few habits keep any countertop looking new for decades.
- Quartz: warm water and dish soap — no abrasive cleaners or bleach
- Granite & marble: reseal annually, wipe spills (citrus, oil) immediately
- Always use a trivet for cast iron and pans straight off the burner
- Cutting boards always — even quartz dulls knives and can scratch
- Hard-water spots: 50/50 white vinegar on quartz only, never on stone

Typically 2–3 weeks once you've picked a slab.
